Tropical Getaway Drink

In celebration of summer coming, I thought I would publish a drink instead of a traditional recipe to switch things up a bit.  The hardest part was coming up with a name for my drink. A “Tropical Getaway”.

Last summer, I came up with this refreshing summer drink. I was very much a red wine drinker for so long but longed for something more fruity and tropical. The way I feel about it is – it’s kind of like being on vacation in your own backyard; sipping these and listening to some reggae music in the background.

I found a watermelon flavored vodka to start, but I had to perfect the concoction.  It went through a few renditions but here it is.  These are super easy to make and it’s something that you can pretty much have any time of year when you need a little pick me up.  I hope you enjoy them as much as we do in my household!  Here’s to the start of summer!

Directions:

Fill a large 32 oz. Mason Jar with ice–about ¾ of the way

2 shot glasses of Smirnoff Watermelon Flavored Vodka

1 cup of orange juice – use the fresh refrigerated kind

¾ cup Fresca soda (helps to keep the calories down because it’s zero calories)

Garnish with watermelon or orange

If you don’t have the 32 oz. Mason Jars (you can purchase them at World Market for $2.49 each), or modify the recipe to use in regular 16 oz. glasses.  Cut the portion of each ingredient in half but still fill the glass with ice to ¾ full as the vodka seems to melt the ice quickly.

Also, if you are really looking to cut down calories and sugar intake, you can substitute the orange juice for the Light Ocean Spray Cran-Rasberry juice or the 50 Calorie Ocean Spary Cran-Rasberry.  It’s just as refreshing and even lighter tasting.
